How AI and Automation Reshaping the Workforce Will Impact Your Career

File this one under “Unless you live under the world’s largest rock…”  you’ve heard that AI is coming for your job. Big changes are on the horizon, and you’re probably (like all of us) wondering what the AI future actually holds for your career.

Many folx are absolutely convinced that AI will displace every and all job while others are convinced that AI will create more jobs than it decimates. I lie in the middle. Will AI kick some career’s asses? Absolutely. But much like the internet’s pummeling of travel agents, I can see where many many more jobs are created by it. Think of all the careers and jobs created to make all the ‘make your own travel plans’ websites and apps run.

No matter your career, AI will absolutely be the biggest thing that’s going to affect your career, no matter what it is you do. So it is a big deal.

Basically, you’re going to have to get used to AI in your career in some form or another so you might as well pay attention to how and where it’s showing up.

Now, you may be thinking, , “The robots are coming for all!” but we are far, far from that. AI really can be harnessed to help (for now anyhow).

And if you’re like a lot of people, you may even be a little afraid that you’re not going to be able to keep up with all the changes that AI is bound to bring. Is this really the end of careers as we know them?

Here’s the low-down on what it all means.

Job displacement vs New Job Creation:

You won’t necessarily lose your job to AI. Automation and AI are replacing routine tasks in various industries, leading to job losses in certain roles but most definitely not all roles and again, the rise of AI means that new roles (that haven’t been thought of yet) will be popping up all over the place. Remember a time when “social media manager” or “influencer marketing agent” weren’t careers that existed? You can expect new roles to emerge in fields like AI development, data analysis and automation maintenance.

Skills gaps vs Upskilling and Re-Skilling

You’ll have to be aware of the demand for technical skills that will be increasing because the increased need (and speed at which they’re needed) is creating a gap between available talent and required expertise.

Most likely, unless you are in a 100% analog, physical labor type of role (and maybe even then) you will probably need to continuously learn new skills to stay relevant in the evolving job market.

Increased Productivity & the Changing Nature of Work:

You may find that Increased productivity as a constant refrain. The dream of AI is that Automation boosts efficiency and productivity, leading to widespread economic growth. That does mean that non-automatable tasks will become the focus for many careers.

The ability to engage in creativity, problem-solving and critical thinking will be key selling points for candidates in all roles.

The Great Unknown

The silver lining? We don’t actually know how any of this will truly play out. We’re creating it as we go along, meaning you’ve got the opportunity to adopt AI and automation now as an early adopter.

If you’ve been pondering a career change for any length of time, this could be the time to get in on the actual creation of a new role or even whole new career.

Action Steps to Take Today

Things are changing fast in careers and as fast as they change we need to change, too. The best way to come out ahead is to pay attention to what tasks and role responsibilities you want to engage in every day. Are they tasks that AI or automation could possibly take on (or already infiltrating)? Do you wish AI would be more involved? Audit your role and your interest in AI taking it on.

If you’re either worried or excited about AI, start to do some consistent research. The more informed you are about the realities of AI the better prepared you will be to engage with it when it comes to your career specifically.

If you stay on top of AI developments and follow along with big rollouts, you’ll be able to navigate your career in the ways you want to instead of being blindsided by automation mishaps.
